Chee Lai (2018)
video game / installation
Chee Lai (2019) is a short video game and virtual exhibition interogating the birth of the Chinese National Anthem and the current political dispute of National Anthem Law in Hong Kong. By appropriating the historical recording of “Chee Lai” in 1941 by American singer/activist Paul Robeson, this work tries to exam the relevance of this piece of recording with the history of the Chinese National Anthem and also the imposing the National Anthem Law in Hong Kong. By using video game as the playable experience, the work suggests that there is a possible future: to salute or not to salute in the game will be a problematic behavior that we may violate the National Anthem Law - not to mention the gesture of making this work that makes use of Chinese National Anthem.
